Volunteering Week: Ying's Story

June 5, 2022

National Volunteers’ Week
1 –7th June is National Volunteers’ Week when organisations across the UK will be celebrating and thanking their volunteers. At the Centre, we benefit hugely from our wonderful team of volunteers, who not only expand the capacity of our team to reach and help more families and young people, but enrich the Centre with their support and enthusiasm for helping local people escape the risk of homelessness.

Sales Assistant Ying spoke to us about her volunteering:

Tell us about your volunteering

My role is volunteering sale assistant in the Charity shop.

Why did you want to volunteer at the Cardinal Hume Centre?

From the Centre, I always get help where ever I needed. So, in return I wanted to help the Centre, that’s why I have chosen to do volunteering in the Cardinal Hume Charity Shop.

What do you get out of your volunteering?

By volunteering in the shop, I would like to gain the confidence to improve my working skills, to interact with the customers and to help them. By knowing the community and encouraging words for the Centre, makes me proud. That I am part of this Centre.

What difference do you feel you make?

I feel that my help towards the community has been valued. I have also been able to show my skills in related with retail and customer service.

What do you like about volunteering at the Cardinal Hume Centre?

Every day I look forward to go work in the shop. It is a very challenging role as every day we receive various donations and different customers and their needs. The shop is a very friendly atmosphere, I have met different people, who are volunteering and coming from different backgrounds. It is also helps me to build my knowledge and to know different cultures.  At the end of the day, I feel good that my help has been useful towards the community and the Cardinal Hume Centre.

Thank you from all of us at the Centre!
