The Death of His Holiness Pope Francis

April 22, 2025

We are deeply saddened by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. Please see the following statement by our Chief Executive, George O'Neill, on behalf of the Cardinal Hume Centre:

I wanted to write this statement following yesterday’s sad news on the death of His Holiness Pope Francis.

I am aware that for many who work, volunteer or support the Centre, our Catholic ethos is a strong motivator for your involvement. The Pope’s life and his strong insistence on care for those who are experiencing poverty or conflict will have been an inspiration.

I have aways been struck about his interest in those who find themselves on the periphery of life and who too often experience discrimination as a result.  I feel sure he would have championed the work the Centre does to support and advocate for our clients, many of whom will have come to us to help find safety and sanctuary.  He regularly reminded people of the inherent dignity found in each person – as we say each person matters – and it is this message that continues to inspire our work today.

Pope Francis was a champion for those who experience poverty; his loss will be mourned by many involved in the Centre and Catholics around the world.  I am also sure people of all faiths and none, will miss his compassion and wisdom on many of the challenges the world is facing. For us, I hope the chance to learn a little more about his life will help renew our confidence in the importance in the Centre’s mission, for those young people and families who are experiencing poverty and homelessness.

With my very best wishes and gratitude for all your support,

George O'Neill

Chief Executive
