The belief in the equal value of every individual is critical to the Centre’s work and ethos. We will actively support diversity, equity and inclusion and ensure that our workforce, clients and residents are treated with dignity and respect. We want to recognise each person’s strengths and encourage everyone at the Centre to reach their potential.
Equality means ensuring everyone has the same opportunities to fulfil their potential free from discrimination.
Inclusion means ensuring everyone feels comfortable to be themselves at the Centre and feels the value of their contribution.
Diversity means the celebration of individual differences amongst the Centre’s workforce, clients and residents.
Equity means recognising barriers and that some groups are more advantaged than others, and putting measures in place to eliminate these barriers, ensuring equal opportunities for all.
We recognise the reality for many families and young people we support falls a long way short of this position. As a service provider and an employer, we seek to redress inequality and disadvantage, underpinned by our Values and Behaviour Framework.
We know that people from marginalised communities are faced with discrimination in all its forms. We see and hear in our work how people of colour face inequalities and discrimination not only in housing and homelessness but also in education, employment, criminal justice, and health. We also know that LGBTQ+ and people with disabilities face discrimination or barriers to access.
Our services provided to families and young people experiencing homelessness are designed to offer as much flexibility as possible to help each individual realise their full potential. We are committed to continuing to listen, learn and implement changes to our provision to ensure that we are removing barriers that prevent people accessing our support.
Today, our staff and volunteers are diverse in their backgrounds, their skills and experience. Many have lived experience of the challenges our clients face. But we know this is less true at a senior or Board level and this something we are working to address through recruitment, learning and development and through improved collaboration with our clients. We know this is key to building a welcoming and inclusive Centre and to improving our impact and support.
